چکیده
Recent results show that the establishment of wing melanization patterns in Drosophila depends on the veins. While several genes have been shown to play a role in melanization, changes in a single gene - the one encoding tyrosine hydroxylase - are sufficient to generate novel pigmentation patterns.

Insect evolution: How the fruit fly changed (some of) its spots
Animals display a wide variety of markings and patterns, from the stripes of zebras to the spots on the wings of butterflies. The significance and genesis of these spots and stripes have long been the subject of speculation. Evolutionary biologists have suggested many possible reasons why species exhibit such patterns, including mimicry, mate recognition and aposematism (where the pattern acts ...
متن کاملCognitive consonance: complex brain functions in the fruit fly and its relatives.
The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has become a model for the study of a growing number of human characteristics because of the power of its genetics. Higher cognitive functions, however, might be assumed to be out of reach for the little fly. But the cumulative history of cognitive studies in insects and some of their arachnid relatives, as well as specific probing of the capabilities of ...
متن کاملHow Does a Fruit Fly Say “Ouch”?
Fruit flies are an ideal animal for biological research. Fruit flies can grow quickly in the lab, and we can study many fruit flies at the same time. The fruit fly has an outer layer, just like the human skin, to protect itself from injury or damage. If humans and fruit flies respond to injury in similar ways, then we can use fruit flies to discover new steps to improve human health. Using smal...
